08/06/2003 Archived Entry: "Allied Spawn Area"

Heath and Ammo behind a wall | Interior of a building

I couldn't figure out what to do with all that space the allies would spawn in... so, I decided to make an "old city" modeled after the old city from Oasis in the Splash Damage Maps. There's still more to be done, but as is, the allies would be protected as they spawn, have multiple exits from their spawn areas, etc.

I went ahead and added some minor detail to the space... a filled in well, some basic interiors to the buildings, propers outer texturing, some foilage, etc. As mentioned, more will be added later.

I just realized I took the screens as an Axis soldier although this is the allied spawn... OH NOS! :)

To be honest, I'm a bit concered because I think the map feels a bit too... open. And maybe not enough interesting gun fights will take place. There's also a lot of routes to different areas... maybe to many? Maybe not enough? I guess when we get to the play testing stages, we'll know for sure. Maybe because it's open terrain... Who knows. I can always add more rocks and stones in various areas for cover... but when does it become too much?

I spoke with Shield today, another mapper, and things are coming along on his end. He's working on the truck scripting at the moment... some sub stuff, etc. What's cool is the temple is pretty much done. You can use the staff, open the doors, go into the tomb, grab the idol, have the rock chase you, etc... the rock thing is a bit buggy still, but it works anyway :)

Hmm... if only I was motivated enough to find a job instead of stay up to 2 AM mapping :/

You might want to put the health and ammo cabinets against a wall, or "in" the sand a little. It seems kind of silly leaving them there like that.
